MRI confirms Nationals' Strasburg has upper-back strain

It was long enough to prematurely end an intriguing pitching matchup between the Mets' Matt Harvey and the Nationals' hyped prospect Lucas Giolito in his big- league debut.

Coming up on Wednesday in Major League Baseball action, the New York Mets and the Washington Nationals will be wrapping up their series at Nationals Park.

Pitching, all of a sudden, is an endangered commodity for the New York Mets.

Harvey appeared to be on his A game after the Washington Nationals hit him hard in his first two starts against him. In fact, Syndergaard was just recently lit up by the Washington Nationals yesterday before leaving the game in the fourth inning. The 21-year-old Giolito threw 29 of his 45 pitches for strikes and was in command against the Mets like a seasoned veteran.

Dodgers over the Brewers
But after the All-Star Weekend, Pederson struggled, hitting just five home runs and ending the year with a.210 batting average. Consider his start on Tuesday night in a 6-5 win over Milwaukee one of the more successful six-walk outings in a while.

The Mets had five hits tonight, but once again left a bunch of men on base - something that needs to be fixed if they have any chance of digging themselves out of this hole. Thor came back down to earth as he gave up five runs in those three innings. He's had two good ones and two bad ones filling in for various pitchers, posting a 5.79 ERA overall in those games. I don't know much about elbows, but that doesn't seem like the kind of thing that will get better on its own while you continue to work it every five days.

After the game was delayed a second time for over an hour and a half, Dusty Baker decided that Giolito's night was over and Yusmeiro Petit took over in the fifth. His first pitch to Curtis Granderson to begin his career was a 95-mph fastball.

Mets: Granderson was removed from the game after the second rain delay and replaced by Alejandro De Aza.... "It's something that, as long as they feel comfortable with me being out there with the way I'm pitching, then I think I'm going to battle through it. That's the mindset- get it all behind me and just go out there and pitch".

"I never saw rain in the forecast at all", Giolito said. And to avoid dropping six games behind, they need spot starter Logan Verrett to outmatch the Nationals' ace Max Scherzer.

Iraqi forces advance on west Fallujah
A group of Iranian MPs issued a statement on Tuesday congratulating the Iraqi people and government on the liberation of Fallujah. IS militants still control the northern Golan neighborhood as well as other scattered pockets, where they are largely surrounded.

Robles took a line drive off his right knee in the seventh inning. An MRI revealed he had bone spurs in his elbow and it's questionable if he's going to be able to pitch through it or require surgery.

Alderson said that first baseman Lucas Duda is about two weeks away from resuming baseball activities.

The Washington Nationals said an MRI exam Stephen Strasburg underwent Monday morning confirmed their diagnosis that the pitcher has an upper back strain. The Mets will have one fewer arm available in the bullpen as a result. Before his first start in the majors, he was 5-3 with a 3.17 earned-run average and 72 strikeouts over 71 innings this season in 14 starts for Class AA Harrisburg.
