Braves Acquire Matt Kemp, Send Hector Olivera to San Diego

Posted August 01, 2016

The Padres traded him to the Atlanta Braves in exchange for left fielder Hector Olivera. Back in April, Olivera was arrested and charged with the assault of a woman. Maybe Braves GM John Coppolella believes he can flip Kemp immediately or in the offseason to an AL team.

Trading for pricey slugger Matt Kemp might be a good way to send a message to disappointed Atlanta fans. Several outlets say Atlanta will be sending back outfielder Hector Olivera, who is now with the Gwinnett Braves. We want to win every night. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the decision has not been announced. I can see Olivera not playing again in 2016, but some team signing him this offseason. On Saturday it was Matt Kemp's turn.

The Braves are last in Major League Baseball in home runs with 64.

Off-Duty Indianapolis Officer Shoots On-Duty Investigator Responding to Domestic Violence Call
The detective was in plain clothes at the time of the attack and suffered an injury to his arm, IMPD Maj. Investigators said the off-duty officer returned to the scene around 11 p.m. and shot a detective.

That's what it all comes down to: The Braves have found a way to rid themselves of Olivera, who had seemed like a rather "untradeable" player considering the circumstances.

The Padres will also send money to the Braves, who will reportedly pay less than half of Kemp's $21.5 million annual salary for the duration of his contract in 2019.

San Diego is sending Atlanta $3 million this year as part of the trade: half on August 15 and the rest on September 15.

Test blow for Ben Stokes
Speaking about Stokes' importance in the side, Cook said that the team will miss the 25-year-old if he can not play at Edgbaston. Soon after that, Stokes had Younis Khan put down in the slips by Cook, and then limped off after suffering a calf strain.

That means the Braves would end up paying Kemp somewhere between $13.5 million to $15.5 million annually for three seasons. The 31-year-old Olivera is owed $28.5 million overall through the 2020 season. He is owed about $46 million over the next few seasons with the Dodgers spending $4.67 million each year bringing it down to a more reasonable $30 million paid by Atlanta. Julio Teheran started the game for the Braves, but didn't have hit best outing. I was at a Padres-Dodgers game right before the All-Star break and never saw a player display such bad body language in a game. "One report out of San Diego said the Padres might even designate Olivera for assignment rather than give him a roster spot".

Olivera has seen just 19 at-bats at the Major League level in 2016, but in a short 24-game stint a year ago for Atlanta, Olivera batted just.253 with two home runs while manning third base.

The Padres have been busy reworking their payroll during the last few days.
