In her very first individual event, the 400-meter preliminaries, Ledecky flirted with breaking her own world record (3:58.37) before settling for a new Olympic record of 3:58.71.
She was just off her world-record time of 3:58.37, but shattered the old Olympic record of 4:01.45 by France's Camille Muffat four years ago. Because she's expected to win big, the Olympian's fans are already tallying up how many medals Katie Ledecky has won so far with the confidence that there are many more to come.
Demonstrative of Ledecky's unrivalled status in the pool was the run sheet of the announcer at the Olympic Aquatic Centre.
The 19-year-old Ledecky told NBC after the race she knew the crowd was into her pursuit of the record.

James Guy also shrugged off the disappointment of finishing sixth in Saturday's 400m freestyle final, as the Briton qualified fifth-fastest for the semi-finals of the men's 200m free. The only shame is that she can't take out the 1500m freestyle as well because the women do not race it at the Olympics. Ledecky now has the top five marks all-time in the event, nine of the top 10.
At the 2015 World Championships, she broke the 800m world record (which she would later break) and the 1500m world record twice-once in the preliminaries, and again in the final.
Bronte Campbell overtook Vollmer in the third leg, while Cate gave Ledecky a view of her wake, something the Maryland teen is known to do in the longer distances.
Russia to appeal blanket ban on weightlifters for Olympics
He said the process would be completed by Friday, the day the Games open. "They didn't admit me for the Olympics in Rio". World Rowing, meanwhile, has barred 19 Russians, most for insuffient tests.
"Yeah, I think my last stroke was a little lackadaisical, so I shouldn't have done that".
Tanja Kylliainen, who was born just down the I-95 in Baltimore, said it was incredible to watch Ledecky's rise. I'm coming off the 100 [4x100m freestyle relay] yesterday, and this is not 100. I didn't want to spin my wheels too much.
"That one felt pretty easy". Of course, she is used to it. She still has four more events to complete this Olympics, and there's a really, really good chance she'll win gold in each one.
