Rio Police, Russian embassy disagree on details of fatality

The Russian vice-consul in Rio-de-Janeiro dramatically shot dead an armed mugger who had tried to hold him up in his auto - just after the Olympic torch relay had passed by on the last day before the Rio 2016 opening ceremony.

"The man involved is a lawyer and also the vice-consul of Russian Federation".

The incident occurred on "Avenida das Americas, the main street in Rio's Barra da Tijuca neighborhood, where the Olympic Village and the majority of Olympic venues are [located]". It added that all of its employees have "Russian names, which is not the case" in the reported assault.

He said: "I am now starting to think about this and I am at the same time realising that it is the first medal. The International Judo Federation (IJF) had been outspoken in backing Russian athletes' right to compete.

"This Brazilian citizen is not an employee of any diplomatic mission and has got nothing to do with Russian institutions overseas", he said.

The Russian Consulate General in Rio, Vladimir Tokmak, told Russian news agency TASS that the report of an armed attack against a diplomat is untrue.

The 60-year-old vice-consul, named in some reports as Marcos Cesar Feres Braga, a lawyer, was stuck in traffic at the Avenida das Americas in Barra da Tijuca, when a robber approached the vehicle by motorbike.

The robber smashed the auto window while the man while he sat in his BMW X6, pointing a gun at him and demanding to hand over his watch.

Rio's 31st Military Police Battalion, charged with investigating the incident, said Braga "acted quickly pulling the criminal inside the auto, took his revolver and fired it towards him".

But Mr Tokmakov said that he could not "rule out" that whoever was involved in the reported incident could have introduced himself as a member of diplomatic staff. The other suspect ran away.

The body of assailant lay in the street for five hours, according to Sky News, as police began their investigation. During that time, Olympic delegations reportedly passed right by the crime scene. Several athletes have been mugged during test events.
