A nearly-flawless performance by South Korea kept US from earning gold, but the American team of Brady Ellison, Zach Garrett and Jake Kaminski earned a silver medal in men's team archery on Saturday at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

Kim will spearhead the top-ranked team featuring Lee Seung-yun and Ku Bon-chan, with the trio hoping to restore their nation's dominance after its run of three Olympic titles from 2000-08 was broken by the United States in the London semi-finals.

In the opening set, the South Korean contingent scored a 10 on all six of their shots.

The South Koreans shot six straight bull's-eyes to open the gold-medal match at the Sambodromo.

In a 6-0 defeat, Ellison, Kaminski, and Olympic newcomer Zach Garrett put on a strong performance.

"They shot unbelievable. That was a world record performance they put on".

The six flawless 10's, called each time by a booming loudspeaker and greeted with roars from the crowd, were a death knell to the Americans' hopes of gold and redemption for their defeat in the London final four years ago to Italy.

Ranked numbers one and two in the world, it was not a surprise to see Korea and the United States contest for gold and silver, yet the bronze medal winners came very much out of the blue. A ideal score is 720. "Ideal is hard to beat".

South Korea took on Australia in the first semifinal match of the day.

The men's team will look to stick together over the next four years and with a veteran nucleus, the future is bright.

This was South Korea's 20th archery medal, its most in a Summer Olympic sport and one behind the record 21 it has from short track speedskating in the Winter Games. "It's helped build trust within the team, and I think it'll be a huge asset in the team event". South Korea continued on to face Australia, the 4-seed, who beat France in the quarterfinals, with a score of 5-3.
