Things to Look For

Its party time for Apple fans!

With all the excitement over the iPhone 7 and Apple's latest operating system for its handheld devices, the iOS 10, it's easy to forget that the Cupertino-based company will also be releasing new software for its desktop computers this month. The final, full version will be available later today (20 September) from the Mac App Store - expect it to be available by around 6pm in the United Kingdom if not a little earlier.

A more recent example of this would be Sierra's predecessor, OS X 10.11 El Capitan, which Apple built on Yosemite's foundations while making the OS easier to run on lower-spec Macs - including Apple's 12-inch MacBook. A bigger deal comes with Apple's reliance on iCloud Drive, and the company answer to Dropbox and Google Drive.

And if you're looking forward to trying out the new Apple Pay and Siri features, you might first want to check whether your Mac is capable of running the software. Because of this Siri is now able to call you an Uber, play your music for you and read your email among other things. Search results can be dragged into documents and even shared with another Apple device. You can ask things like "where's the nearest Costco", or "what does the traffic look like".

Met Office announces new storm names for upcoming winter
The Met Office launched the "Name Our Storms" project in 2015 in the hope that it would raise awareness of severe weather. In line with naming conventions, the letters Q, U, X, Y and Z have been omitted from the list.

Support for Apple's personal assistant, Siri, is the update's marquee feature additions. Or, maybe you need a recovery disk for older Macs that don't support the Internet Recovery feature. Since then, it has kept evolving, as Apple continued to pour more resources into machine learning to make Siri smarter and sound more natural.

Shoppers can now click the Apple Pay button at checkout on almost 300,000 participating websites and then complete their purchase with Touch ID on iPhone 6 or later or with Apple Watch. Users' credit or debit card information is not shared with online merchants and strong encryption protects all communication between a user's device and Apple Pay servers. So whether you've downloaded that song a couple of times, or got hundreds of the same picture your MacBook will help your sort out the good from the bad.

Another feature that was already available on several other platforms has now been brought to the Mac by Apple. Memories can automatically create curated collections of occasions like birthday parties or family vacations and create lovely collections out of your pictures.

Let's get the main new features out of the way. Finally, Apple has added a feature to MacOS that can remove all that useless junk.

Pokémon Go player records own mugging on livestream
You can see video of the incident, which happened just after midnight Sunday on Central Park South near 6th Avenue, below. Fortunately the entire event was streamed live so there's plenty of video evidence to catch out, which you can do below.

Instead of having to type in your credit card - or hope that the merchant has safely kept your number on file - you can check out by clicking on an Apple Pay button. That means, those of you still using Leopard or Snow Leopard - or dare we say, older versions - will need to upgrade to a later operating system in order to install Sierra. You cannot store and sync files selectively.

Reaction to the launch of iOS 10 has been mixed with some users complaining of poor performance, but welcoming the ability to delete Apple's own apps for the first time and giving Messages a new lease of life.

Web links in your conversations now appear with content previews and videos that you can watch right in Messages. Apple's apps that support tabs from the off include Mail, Maps, TextEdit and the three iWork apps - Pages, Numbers and Keynote. It works with iTunes and some Safari video.

Overall? Well, Sierra is certainly a good update and the fact that it is free is a strong argument in its favor.
