Dylann Roof Went to Another AME Church after the Charleston Shooting

Posted February 24, 2017

Dylann Roof drove to a second church with black parishioners after gunning down nine worshippers during a Bible study at Charleston's Emanuel AME Church on the night of June 17, 2015, according to newly unsealed court records.

Roof's legal team sought to keep the Branch AME information out of his trial, noting in documents of their own that the church - one of more than 500 AME congregations in SC - was merely near his route from Charleston to North Carolina and that the government had no evidence Roof had planned an attack there.

Prosecutors say he had driven past Branch AME numerous times before the shooting. When he arrived at the building, his Global Positioning System was shut off for several minutes, indicating that he had turned off his vehicle.

According to CBS, both churches were advertising Wednesday Bible study classes, and Roof wished to kill as many people as possible that evening. "I dread to even think about that", he said. Roof had represented himself in court since the penalty phase of the trial began. But Berry told the Charleston newspaper that he was unsettled by the news.

The motion noted no commercial buildings are near the Branch church, suggesting Roof visited the area only to enter the church. He told them that he considered several targets including a "black festival" before deciding to attack Emanuel AME.

Global Positioning System information from Dylann Roof's auto reveals a chilling detail: He stopped at a second SC church after his massacre, reports ABC affiliate WCIV.
