In Thursday's confirmation hearings, Schumer argued that Gorsuch had failed to "convince me that he would be a mainstream judge who could rule free from the biases of politics and ideology", according to the Washington Times.

"We did not get any real answers to any real questions about what he thinks about the law and why", he said. Senate Republicans have alluded to changing the rules in order to allow a simple majority to confirm Gorsuch - the so-called "nuclear option."

If Gorsuch is confirmed, he would restore a 5-4 conservative majority on the Supreme Court, a key goal of Republicans. This is apparently now a disqualifying attribute for any Supreme Court justice. However, Gorsuch faced an uphill battle with Democrats from the beginning, partially because Obama nominee Merrick Garland never stood a chance after being blocked by the GOP, and so, the lines were drawn.

Gorsuch had been pressed on the idea that President Donald Trump wanted to nominate a judge who would overturn Roe v. Wade.

Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer called on fellow Democrats on Thursday to filibuster the confirmation of Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch, which would require 60 votes to overcome.

Moments later, Sens. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Tom Carper (D-Del.) also announced they would oppose Gorsuch, while earlier in the day Sen.

Hearings for a Supreme Court nominee usually dominate Congress, but that's not been the case over the four days of hearings.
