After that trial period, the police departments would either send back the cameras or buy them.

In company news, TASER International ( TASR ) was finishing lower Wednesday on its final day as a weapons-focused company, today disclosing plans to change its corporate name to Axon Enterprise Inc - reflecting its ongoing change-over to a body-worn camera company - and changing its stock ticker to AAXN, effective tomorrow, April 6.

TASER International began making electrical weapons 23 years ago in the hopes of saving lives by reducing the amount of times officers shot their deadly weapons.

Mason County Coroner Wes Stockwell told the Kitsap Sun that Rosa had been visiting his mother who lives in nearby North Mason . Court records indicate Fanning said he shot at Rosa three times, rather than the four times reported by other sources.

The program is Axon's attempt to help smaller police departments navigate what it characterized as growing challenges for law enforcement: "limited resources, lack of staffing, and equipment issues", the statement said. More information on the offer is available here.

Smith said that filming incidents in high-definition video can also serve as a way of protecting officers that fall under pressure for using their weapons.

This offer gives departments the chance to prove the benefits of body camera technology before investing taxpayer dollars in purchasing it. Procurement remains a cumbersome, uncertain process: Even as police work and technology has evolved, procurement can still rely on paperwork, presentations, and promises-not field testing by actual officers. And Axon's free trial offer is not valid for departments that have requested, and are assessing, body-camera proposals from providers, because during that period Axon isn't allowed to have much communication with the agency. As of press time, neither Taser/Axon or the NYPD could tell us whether the free camera offer was ever part of Taser/Axon's bid.

The CEO added that the name change from Taser to Axon supports the network-oriented shift.

"Every officer that carries a gun should have a camera", Smith said.

Axon will be providing every office in the United State access to their technology.
