American Soldier Killed in Afghanistan in Anti-ISIS Operation: US Military

An American soldier was killed in action in Afghanistan Saturday, Navy Capt. Bill Salvin, spokesperson for the U.S. Forces in Afghanistan, said in a statement.

A USA soldier was killed during the counter-terrorism operations in eastern Nangarhar province of Afghanistan.

However, he did not provide further details and said that more information could be released later.

U.S troops in Afghanistan are split between two missions - NATO's Resolute Support mission to advise Afghan security forces and the separate Freedom's Sentinel, the U.S counter-terrorism operation against the remnants of al-Qaeda; an emerging offshoot of Daesh; and other terrorists groups.

This comes as at least three United States soldiers were wounded in an explosion in Jalalabad city, the provincial capital of eastern Nangarhar province last month.

The service member was not identified as the Pentagon notifies his next-of-kin. Those operations are sometimes carried out in conjunction with Afghan forces.

About 8,400 USA soldiers remain in Afghanistan, carrying out two missions - one under NATO's mission to train and assist Afghan forces, and a second counterterrorism mission focused on al-Qaida and affiliates of the Islamic State. In July of 2016 a US drone strike killed the group's leader for Afghanistan and Pakistan, Hafiz Saeed Khan.

The death was the first US casualty in Afghanistan from hostile fire since the beginning of the year, according to a tally kept by the website iCasualties. It is the first US combat fatality in Afghanistan this year. USA officials have said they believe the movement has only 700 fighters but Afghan officials estimate it has about 1,500.
