Trump adviser visits Pakistan after massive airstrike

Posted April 18, 2017

US National Security Advisor General H.R. McMaster arrived in Kabul on Sunday (April 16), days after the American military dropped its largest non-nuclear bomb on Islamic State group hideouts in eastern Afghanistan, killing almost a hundred militants.

It also said Sharif would welcome USA mediation in Pakistan's disputes with India.

According to the reading in New Delhi, such statements were in keeping with India's own thinking about the region, "but we will have to wait and see how the talks on Tuesday proceed", said a second person familiar with the development.

Lt. General McMaster was assisted in the meeting by David Hale, US Ambassador, Laurel Miller, Acting U.S. Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan, Senior Director for South Asia Lisa Curtis and Director Pakistan Jay Wise in the National Security Council.

"The prime minister conveyed Pakistan's readiness to work with the worldwide community to explore ways in which the Afghan crisis can be resolved", Sharif's office said in a statement.

The Trump administration has also scaled up the air campaign against the Taliban, best on display Thursday with the use of the largest non-nuclear bomb in the military's arsenal on the Islamic State.

Sartaj Aziz said Pakistan and the USA have been close friends over decades and that a continued strong partnership remained critical to promoting peace and stability in the wider region.

McMaster met with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and other senior officials.

Sharif also referred to his commitment to a peaceful neighbourhood and "reiterated his firm conviction on sustained dialogue and meaningful engagement as the only way forward to resolve all outstanding issues between India and Pakistan, including the Kashmir dispute".

McMaster will appear on ABC's "This Week" following the USA military's Thursday strike on ISIS tunnels in northeastern Afghanistan.

India has already rejected any role for the United States in mediating between New Delhi and Islamabad.

On terrorism, the Adviser noted that impressive gains have been made in eliminating terrorists and that Pakistan remained determined to continue this fight as part of the National Action Plan until the scourge of terrorism is completely eliminated from its soil. Conveying Pakistan's concerns over the deteriorating security situation in Afghanistan, Sartaj reaffirmed Pakistan's commitment to work with the worldwide community to support efforts for peace and reconciliation in Afghanistan.
