8 shot during San Diego pool party; suspect dead

One unidentified witness told the newspaper that the shooting occurred at his best friend's birthday party.

The San Diego police chief tells the Union-Tribune that police received reports of a man shooting people by the swimming pool. The brief comes after police said that eight people had been shot noted Fox 5 San Diego.

Eight victims were transported to a local hospital, some of them suffering from critical injuries. San Diego Police Department officers shot and killed Selis after he fired at police, police said. "We don't know if he knew any of the victims", Zimmerman said.

Besides the seven who were shot, an eighth person broke his arm while fleeing the gunfire, police said.

Witness Lauren Seed said: "Somebody opened fire". He said that all four of the wounded people he personally saw were Black, but noted that more people were injured and ran away.

One witness said the shooter was sitting down, having a beer when he began shooting.

Zimmerman said officials were trying to identify the suspect's motive and could not say if the incident could be termed as a hate crime.
