New Zealand rule out Rugby League World Cup captain after cocaine case

Caller AJ joins Kerre and Mark to discuss his strong views on the alleged drug taking by Kiwi League players Kevin Proctor and Jesse Bromwich.

"I regret making the choice of staying out with my teammates until the early hours of Saturday morning, as well as consuming an excessive amount of alcohol", Bromwich said.

"We have values to uphold, and I can't express enough that they have broken my trust, and their teammates' trust".

"No one is bigger than the team".

The dropping of both men will be a huge blow for New Zealand's World Cup campaign, however it's understood the severe move will serve as a cultural warning to every other player in contention for the tournament.

Now senior Kiwis players will be involved in a group who will decide the fate of the disgraced pair, with suspension from this year's Rugby League World Cup not ruled out.

The Kiwi back-rower was appointed Titans co-captain in February but could be stripped of the leadership role if allegations of purchasing cocaine are proven.

Kevin Proctor has also stood down from his role as co-captain of the Titans.

The Daily Telegraph's Jamie Pandaram is reporting an announcement is set to be made on Monday afternoon that NZRL will abandon Bromwich and Proctor from their World Cup plans.

Greenberg backed the game's current drug-testing procedures but declined to confirm whether the Integrity Unit had tested either Proctor or Bromwich over the weekend.

"I'm pretty gutted", Kidwell said.

New Zealand faces Samoa, Scotland and Tonga in pool play at the World Cup. "The rest of the night is a bit of a blur as I obviously had too much to drink before the incident", Proctor said.

Jesse Bromwich captained the Kiwis in their test against Australia and has had a long standing career in league with the Melbourne Storm.

The Melbourne Storm suspended Bromwich for two games and ordered him to undergo counselling and treatment courses.

While both players were named in a court hearing at the weekend, neither has been charged with anything. "A playing fee for a test match is $20,000. they're hefty penalties", said Storm chief executive David Donaghy.
