But following this latest meeting, Trump told Lavrov Moscow should "rein in the Assad regime, Iran and Iranian proxies". Lavrov called it a US decision, echoing Putin, who said Russian Federation had nothing to do with Comey's dismissal. Dmitry Peskov said Kremlin officials hoped Trump's decision to dismiss the Federal Bureau of Investigation director would not affect Russia's relationship with the United States "in any way".
"We had a very, very good meeting with Mr. Lavrov, and I thought it was very good", Trump said.
After Trump ordered missile strikes on a Syria airbase last month in response to Syrian government's alleged use of chemical weapons, the Russian government condemned the military action, calling Washington's move "aggression against a sovereign state in violation of global law".
Trump's talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov would occur after the Russian's meetings earlier in the day with Secretary of State Rex Tillerson.
Lavrov chalked up the controversy to "noise" and to "false news" - invoking Trump's frequent references to the Russian Federation allegations as "fake news".
"We want to see the killing, the frightful killing, stopped in Syria as soon as possible and everyone is working toward that end", Trump told reporters.

Earlier, as Tillerson and Lavrov posed for photographs, the Russian sarcastically deflected a reporter's question about Comey's dismissal.
