Gregg Allman dead at 69

Posted May 28, 2017

Rock trailblazer Gregg Allman, a founding member of The Allman Brothers, has died age 69.

According to a statement on Allman's official website, the Southern rock pioneer had been struggling with many health issues over the years.

Allman's percussive Hammond B-3 organ playing helped anchor the Allman Brothers' rhythm section and provided a chuffing counterpoint to the often heated musical interplay between his brother and the band's other lead guitarist, Dickey Betts.

Gregg Allman's soulful vocals and Hammond organ were key ingredients in the group's sound, while he also wrote or co-wrote numerous band's enduring signature hits, including "Whipping Post", "Midnight Rider", "Melissa" and "Ain't Wastin' Time No More".

A 22-minute version of "Whipping Post" was a highlight of the group's popular 1971 live album "At Fillmore East". Bassist Oakley was killed in a motorcycle accident in 1972, and the band gradually succumbed to drug abuse and internal bickering.

The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995 but Allman said in his book that he was too drunk to enjoy it.

After his death, singer Cher, who he was married to in the 1970s, tweeted "words are impossible", before sharing a picture of the two together.

Duane Allman had quickly ascended to the pantheon of guitar heroes, not just from his contributions to the Allman band, but from his session work with Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett and with Eric Clapton on the classic "Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs" album.

Some of Gregg's greatest hits include: "Ramblin' Man", "Blue Sky", and "Melissa". Allman was arrested on federal drug charges in 1976 and made himself unpopular by agreeing to testify against the band's friend and tour manager, John "Scooter" Herring. The two had a son, Elijah Blue Allman, and briefly became a recording duo, known as Allman and Woman, before divorcing in 1979. Although older and wiser, Allman's past caught up with him; he went public with his Hepatitis C diagnosis in 2007 and underwent a liver transplant in 2010. In 2012, he received a Grammy for lifetime achievement.
