Massive Attack On Google Play May Have Reached 36 Million Users

Posted May 30, 2017

Now, a new malware is said to have infected somewhere between 8.5 to 36.5 million devices.

The malware, then, uses [the] infected devices to generate large amounts of fraudulent clicks on advertisements, generating revenues for the perpetrators behind it.

Check Point claims that a Korean company called Kiniwini, registered as ENISTUDIO Corp on the Google Play Store, is behind the malware. It has also started an internal investigation to bring more stringent measures to control malwares and check if there are apps with similar malwares on Play store.

Among such apps, one had been available directly through Google's Play Store for over a year until recently. Checkpoint says it's "unclear" if there is a direct connection between all of the apps, noting that it's possible that code was borrowed between apps "knowingly or unknowingly".

As per reports, Judy malware was found embedded in as many as 41 apps on Google Play, and as such represents a serious error on the part of the company's screening process of allowing apps on its platform.

When it comes to Google Play Store and the Judy malware being able to go undetected for so long, you also should be checking out developers and games before downloading them. All of these apps were updated recently, making it hard for the security company to calculate Judy's exact impact and reach.

Developed by a South Korean company, Judy has been evading Google's security checks for more than a year as it was found on apps dating back to April 2016. According to Checkpoint, the apps managed to dodge the standard Google security measures by remaining relatively clean while being at the Play Store. This would make the infection rate one of the most significant in the history of the Android app store.

Hackers built a seemingly benign bridgehead app, which establishes connection to the victim's device and further inserts it into the app store. But just to be sure, you can check the list of apps published by the security research firm.

There's a new piece of Android malware on the loose and it's a doozy.

The working of the malware is interesting.

It is an adware that is used to generate fraudulent clicks to gain revenue.

Check Point added that the Judy malware campaign is "possibly the largest malware campaign found on Google Play". Some even offer protection for multiple devices.
