Gone is the overarching American desire to strive for a global compact on major issues facing the world such as climate change, nuclear proliferation, and trade - all premised quietly and in an understated manner on United States primacy; in its place, visiting leaders are faced with loud and demonstrative assertion of America First with a laundry list of grievances and quibbles.

The meeting will take place a few weeks after the US President caused unease in New Delhi by alleging that India had made its participation in the Paris Agreement "contingent on receiving billions and billions and billions of dollars in foreign aid from developed countries".

Regional security situation including Pakistan-sponsored terrorism and other worldwide issues are expected to figure prominently during the meeting of the two leaders.

In making the announcement, the USA president said New Delhi had made its participation "contingent on receiving billions and billions and billions of dollars in foreign aid".

Strongly rejecting Trump's contention, India said it signed the Paris deal not under duress or for lure of money but due to its commitment to protect the environment.

Apart from ways to enhance trade and business cooperation, the two leaders are also expected to discuss defence ties.

"Big, big fan." Trump and Modi have briefly spoken to each other after his presidential inauguration ceremony. With the United States looking inward, New Delhi must step up to play a leadership role in addressing one of the most pressing challenges facing the world.
