India, Pakistan become full members of SCO

Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a bilateral meeting with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani on 9 June on the margins of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Astana and strongly condemned the recent spate of terrorist attacks in Kabul and other parts of Afghanistan, and expressed India's honest condolences on loss of hundreds of innocent lives and injury to several more. Modi further said terrorism is one of the chief violators of human rights and values.

"Connectivity with SCO member countries is a priority for India and we whole-heartedly support it".

"Terrorism is a major threat to humanity", Mr Modi said, adding that there was a need for concerted efforts to defeat terrorism and radicalisation.

In addition to this, Pakistan also became the full member of SCO.

The recently concluded SCO Astana summit in Kazakhstan marked the entry of India and Pakistan as members of the organisation.

Mr Modi's other focus was on connectivity where he touched upon the concern that territorial sovereignty and integrity should be maintained while building greater connectivity.

President Jinping congratulated India on its expected official membership of the SCO and stated China's willingness to strengthen cooperation with India under the SCO framework and jointly make positive contribution to its sound and steady development.

On the sidelines of the summit, Modi held bilateral talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani and heads of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. "If Russia uses its strength and convince China, then the positive result will be seen in terms of terrorism", Sinha asserted. Xi's unprecedented snub followed deep disappointment and grief among Chinese public over the slaying of the two Chinese citizens who were kidnapped last month from Quetta in Balochistan.

Putin also said that the decision to start the process of India's and Pakistan's admission to the SCO had been made during the 2015 summit in Ufa under Russia's presidency in the organisation, and stressed that these countries had fulfilled all requirements to enter the SCO in less than two years.
