Senate Panel Meets With Special Counsel Robert Mueller in Russia Probe

Posted June 18, 2017

Last month, Rosenstein sent a memo to Trump raising concerns over FBI Director James Comey - concerns the White House then cited as a central reason for Comey's firing.

The President's tweet sparked immediate speculation about the future of the official, Rod Rosenstein, who wrote a memo recommending Comey be ousted and also later approved the appointment of a special counsel - Robert Mueller - to lead the Russian Federation probe.

USA TODAY previously reported that the FBI was investigating Kushner for his contact with Russian officials, but there was no word at that time that his financial dealings were part of the probe.

President Donald Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner, who despite his lack of qualifications has become one of the most powerful people in his presidency, is reported to be under investigation by the special counsel entrusted with probing the Trump-Russia scandal. Those associates include former national security adviser Michael Flynn, campaign chairman Paul Manafort, foreign policy aide Carter Page and outside adviser Roger Stone.

It also also heard from Attorney General Jeff Sessions about the Comey-Trump meeting and talked to several high-ranking officials about whether the president tried to interfere with the Russian Federation probe, CNN noted. She added of Trump: "He seems to be buddy-buddy with these epic creeps".

Apparently, Trump believes (or knows?) the report to be correct.

Trump under investigation for obstruction of justice
Many expected that Mueller would at some point turn to the topic of whether the president obstructed justice. The White House on Wednesday evening declined to comment about the Post's obstruction-of-justice report .

While a sitting president is unlikely to face criminal prosecution, obstruction of justice could form the basis for impeachment.

Trump said that "nobody has been able to show any proof yet"."After 7 months of investigations & committee hearings about my "collusion with the Russians", nobody has been able to show any proof".

However, the Wall St Journal quoted a source as saying that Mr Mueller would examine whether Mr Comey's sacking was an attempt by the president to alter the course of the investigation.

Trump's decision to go after Rosenstein sparked widespread speculation in Washington that he may dismiss the deputy attorney general in yet another attempt to get past the Russian Federation investigation, although the likely effect of such a step would be to ignite a new political firestorm and claims that the President is abusing his power and mounting a coverup.

In a second Tweet, Trump echoed previous claims that he is the victim of what he says is the "single greatest witch hunt in American political history".

Days after Comey was abruptly ousted, Rosenstein appointed Robert Mueller as special counsel to investigate Russian involvement in the 2016 presidential election and possible collusion with the Trump campaign.

In an address to the country, Trump struck a notably less partisan tone in response to his first major domestic crisis.

President Donald Trump says the economy is improving and job numbers are up, despite the "phony Witch Hunt" against him.

The Senate Intelligence Committee has interviewed Johnson about the matter.

Mueller is also investigating Trump for obstruction of justice, the Post reported Wednesday.

A Justice official said Rosenstein was motivated in part because of frustration that recent news stories have unfairly brought on a torrent of "leak" accusations against the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Mueller's team.

Russian President Vladimir Putin says former FBI Director James Comey's acknowledgement that he had given memos of his conversations with President Donald Trump to a friend who leaked them to the media is "weird". Though just over half of Americans say they disapprove of Trump's firing of Comey, the number grows to 79 percent among Democrats. Comey testified that the member of his leadership team said that although it was true at the moment that Trump was not under investigation, it was possible that could change.
