The Mara Salvatrucha, or MS-13 gang, has been operating in and around the USA for more than two decades.

Under Trump, Immigration and Customs Enforcement has targeted the gang, deporting more than 2,700 criminal gang members in fiscal 2017, up from 2,057 in the entire previous fiscal year, the White House has said.

The president was talking to law enforcers in Brentwood, on Long Island in NY, which has been shocked by a recent spate of graphic gang murders.

Trump's visit to his home state of NY came as Sessions was in El Salvador to increase worldwide cooperation against the gang. Trump failed however to outline his plan for the 'liberation' of cities like NY and San Francisco who have found themselves inundated by gang activity in recent years.

An administration official pointed to migration from Central American as the "principle factor" for MS-13's growth into the USA, though the administration has been continuously unable to give reporters any hard numbers of how many suspected MS-13 members are immigrants or were gang members when they migrated to the US. "They should not be here", Trump said.

Trump has compared MS-13's "meanness" to that of al-Qaida and has promised he would rid the country of it.
