Months ago, Priebus' deputy, Katie Walsh - a former RNC chief of staff, who was accused of being a leaker by rivals inside the White House - left to work on a PAC supporting Trump.

However, Mr Kelly has not always appeared to be on the same page as Mr Trump, publicly questioning the need for a full border wall with Mexico and calling Russian Federation a threat to the United States as the President has tried to develop friendlier relations with Moscow.

Trump had lost confidence in Priebus, privately questioning his competence after major legislative items have failed to pass congress, someone close to Trump told Reuters news agency.

Priebus also sought to quell rumors of a bitter rivalry amongst senior White House aides, particularly following Anthony Scaramucci's hiring as communications director.

As chairman of the Republican National Committee during the 2016 presidential campaign, Priebus' team supplanted a thin Trump campaign with money and staff to help Trump win the presidency.
