All smiles, the royal tipped his hat while greeting those around him.

Since Elizabeth became queen in 1952, Philip has taken part in more than 22,200 solo engagements, given nearly 5,500 speeches and gone on more than 600 solo trips overseas.

He carried out his last official public engagement at Buckingham Palace on August 2.

Philip and the Queen married in 1947, and as royal duties became more demanding, he was forced to give up a successful active military career that included serving in the Royal Navy throughout World War II. He was appointed Captain General back in 2 June 1953, succeeding the late King George VI.

Tactics, events that defined Joe Arpaio's career as sheriff
Arpaio later faced a civil trial for ignoring several orders, and he was found guilty of civil contempt of court a year ago . But Arpaio, Bolton concluded, came up with what he described as his backup plan: turn illegal immigrants over to the U.S.

Prince Philip "will not be accepting new invitations for visits and engagements, although he may still choose to attend certain public events from time to time", a statement read.

Prince Philip then took the royal salute from a dais on the Palace forecourt and parade ended with three cheers for the Captain General. Queen Elizabeth has given up long-haul travel but still routinely attends more than 400 engagements a year and will continue to carry on her full schedule.

It comes after he announced he would retire in the autumn after completing 22,219 solo engagements since 1952.

Prince Philip is finally retiring from royal duties at age 96.

Spinners deliver on day four as India register their biggest win overseas
The Indians outplayed Rangana Herath and his boys in all the departments at Galle to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. This gives them a licence to inflict more agony on the opposition and literally bat them out of the Test match.

The British public, so used to seeing the prince accompany the Queen up the aisle to attend a church service, received a glimpse of what it might be like to see the Queen without the prince, in settings they have usually been seen together, in 2012.

Philip's retirement comes less than two months after he was discharged from hospital after being treated for an infection stemming from an undisclosed pre-existing condition.

The palace has said it was not a decision made on the advice of doctors.

Tributes to the longest serving royal consort in British History have been flooding in after the announcement, first made to the royal staff in the ballroom of Buckingham Palace last week.

Chelsea suffer another humiliating defeat to Inter Milan
Chelsea once again started their game very slowly and were reliant on counter-attacks - something that is clearly not working. Alvaro Morata was handed his first start by Antonio Conte , while fellow new signing Antonio Rudiger started on the bench.

The couple are set to mark their 70th or platinum wedding anniversary in November this year. The BBC reported that the rank will pass to Philip's grandson Prince Harry following his retirement.
