World's oldest man Yisrael Kristal dies aged 113

Last year Yisrael, an observant Jew, hit the headlines after deciding to celebrate his Bar Mitzvah a century late.

The world's oldest man, a Holocaust survivor who was set to turn 114 next month, died Friday in Israel.

Kristal's death on Friday came a year after he was recognised by Guinness World Records as the world's oldest living man.

He was born in 1903 to an Orthodox Jewish family near the town of Zarnow in Poland.

According to the news site Ynet, Mr. Kristal leaves two children, nine grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren.

Israel Kristal was certified a year ago by Guinness World Records as the world's oldest living man. His first wife, two children and other family members were killed at the camp by the Nazis. Kristal, however, managed to survive, performing slave labor.

Oren Kristal said his grandfather gave no explanation as to the secret behind his incredible longevity. When he was found by Soviet liberating forces, he weighed just 37 kilograms (81 pounds). "I believe that everything is determined from above and we shall never know the reasons why".

"There have been smarter, stronger and better looking men than me who are no longer alive", he said at the time.

He and his wife were then sent to Auschwitz where she was murdered.Kristal remarried in 1947 and emigrated to Israel in 1950. "All that is left for us to do is to keep on working as hard as we can and rebuild what is lost". In 2016, when he turned 113, Krista made a decision to mark a special event- his bar mitzvah- a century late.

Foreign ministers from 17 Western Hemisphere nations, however, refused to recognise the new "all-powerful body", AP reported. It also demanded the "implementation of the precautionary measures issued by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights".

The current holder of the title "oldest living person" is Violet Brown, a 117-year-old Jamaican woman, born in March of 1900.
