Theresa May has refused to rule out military action against North Korea

She said she will discuss a potential free trade agreement with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe at their summit Thursday.

The two leaders agreed that close coordination between the South, the USA, and Japan was to thank for the UNSC's swift adoption on Tuesday afternoon of a statement condemning the test of what North Korea has confirmed was the Hwasong-12 ballistic missile.

"In their telephone conversation, the two leaders highly evaluated their countries' close cooperation in dealing with the crisis".

The Prime Minister has landed in Japan for an official visit, one day after Pyongyang filed a missile over the north of the country.

'We will be re-doubling our efforts with our global partners to put pressure on North Korea, to stop these illegal activities.

She believes that Chinese pressure would be "the best way" of influencing North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

The Prime Minister refused to rule out future British military action against North Korea or cyber warfare after being quizzed by reporters four times on the issue.

Security and defence was always due to be high on the agenda during the Mrs May's three-day trip to Japan, but recent events have added urgency to the talks.

Japan's foreign ministry said Abe is expected to ask May to maintain transparency and predictability regarding Brexit so that any impact on corporate activity will be minimized - echoing concerns Abe expressed in April about a Brexit cliff-edge. It is an important longstanding relationship between the United Kingdom and Japan.

She will meet Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in Kyoto before traveling to Tokyo for an investment conference and banquet. The EU has trade deals with external countries like Switzerland and South Korea, and is now finalising its own deal with Japan.

A 15-strong delegation of UK business leaders, along with International Trade Secretary Liam Fox are flying out for the visit and will attend the UK Japan business forum in central Tokyo, where the PM will make a speech.

She said: 'I'm looking forward to it, it's my first visit to Japan.

"You know, even contemplating an idea of new sanctions while we have just adopted the resolution on August 5, devalues the idea itself".
