Why a Facebook warrant could signal a turning point in Mueller's investigation

Posted September 18, 2017

CNN on Sunday confirmed, citing an unnamed source with knowledge of the matter, that Facebook gave Mueller copies of the ads and "related information". The social platform's policy says it would only turn over "the stored contents of any account", including messages and location data under a search warrant. Evidence has come to light in recent months that people connected to the Russian government used social networks and other media in various ways in attempts to sway public opinion in favor of the Republican candidate, Donald J. Trump, over the Democratic candidate, Hillary Clinton.

They suggested, he now believes he may be able to obtain enough evidence to charge specific foreign entities with a crime.

Facebook Inc, under pressure over its role in possible Russian meddling in last year's US presidential election, said it plans an election integrity initiative to protect Canada's next vote from cyber threats.

In order to obtain a search warrant in the first place, a prosecutor must demonstrate to a judge a reason to believe a crime has been committed and that the information requested by the warrant will provide evidence of the crime.

DHS bans Kaspersky on federal PCs over Russian Federation fears
Kaspersky said the company was happy to have an opportunity to provide information to show that the allegations are unfounded. Earlier this week, retailer Best Buy said it would stop selling Kaspersky software for the time being.

Former federal prosecutor Renato Mariotti told BI's Natasha Bertrand that the warrant "may be the biggest news in the case since the Manafort raid" - referring to the pre-dawn FBI raid on the home of former Trump 2016 campaign chairman Paul Manafort.

Mariotti wrote, "It also means that he has evidence of that crime that convinced a federal magistrate judge of two things: first, that there was good reason to believe that the foreign individual committed the crime. For example, if somebody knew about the Russian operation and helped it succeed, they could also be criminally liable", he said. These specific Facebook accounts were purchased at the time of 2016 election, these accounts targeted ads. That's aiding and abetting.

Trump administration appeals to Supreme Court on refugee ban
By that point, the original 90-day travel ban will have lapsed and the 120-day refugee ban will have just a few weeks to run. As a matter of law, the Supreme Court can't rule on a case that no longer presents an ongoing issue.

Rep. Adam Schiff, the ranking Democrat on the House intelligence committee, said the level of sophistication of the ads could let investigators find out if the Trump campaign had any involvement.

Mapping the full Russian propaganda effort is important.
