Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Sunday ordered a probe into violence at Banaras Hindu University (BHU) where a number of students, including girls and media persons, were injured in lathi charge by the police.

According to the student body of BHU, what started off as a protest against eve-teasing was catapulted to a different level by certain students affiliated to various political parties.

Meanwhile, the police on Monday has filed a first information report (FIR) against almost 1000 BHU students for arson, media reported.

The students alleged that the police thrashed them.

The protest main agenda is the recent alleged sexual harassment with the students.

All India Students' Association's national president Sucheta De said, "The BHU movement is a declaration of freedom for all women across the country".

Students alleged that BHU administration indulged in victim shaming after one student had reported an incident of molestation to them.

One student, Akanskha Gupta, said campus officials did not take their complaints of harassment seriously.

It is very bad on the side of police to have a lathi charge on the female students who were protesting on the eve teasing issue.

The Uttar Pradesh government and the BJP came under scathing attack of the opposition post the incident.

The security guards did nothing to stop them while her hostel warden, instead of raising the issue with the administration, questioned her why she returned late to the hostel. The 5 pm meeting with the girls was to be held at MMV college, while the 8 pm meeting was said to be happening at Triveni Hostel, where the incident of molestation had occurred.

Students protested after four outsiders entered the campus and molested the student but police force was used when the students asked for a public apology from the molesters and blocked the gate, disallowing the police to enter the campus. This type casting is a logical outcome of the penetration of Hindutva supporters in institutions of higher education.

The students demanded 24 X 7 security, making security personnel accountable for lapses, better lighting on roads leading to women's hostels, CCTV surveillance, inclusion of women security personnel and formation of a gender sensitisation committee.

They have criticised Tripathi for calling the police and for forcibly closing down all the hostels for arts, science and commerce students till October 2.

Earlier, the students were protesting the entry of an army vehicle in the campus and pelted stones.
