Blade Runner 2049 falls short during opening weekend

Also new this week is animated film My Little Pony with an $8 million debut.

Blade Runner 2049 received rave reviews from critics with Flickreel even awarding it a five star rating.

It did not have a great, explosive spurt from the starting line - garnering only US$31.5 million (S$43 million) on the opening weekend in North America.

There are some things that just plain ruin cinema for a lot of normally enthusiastic cinema fans and the idea that a Transformers movie could make a billion dollars while something as important and worthy as Blade Runner 2049 stumbles disastrously at the box office is right up there.

Survival drama The Mountain Between Us, starring Idris Elba and Kate Winslet, was the weekend's runner-up, coming in slightly below projections with a moderate US$10.1 million. The movie was directed by Ridley Scott, who also made the original Blade Runner and was an executive producer on 2049. Based on the Hasbro toys and television series, the movie's voice cast includes Emily Blunt, Kristin Chenoweth, Uzo Aduba and singer Sia.

Fox's third weekend of "Kingsman: The Golden Circle" come in 5th with $8.7 million while Universal's second weekend of "American Made" came in 6th place, followed by Warner's third weekend of "The Lego Ninjago Movie" with $7 million.

Globally, the film took $50.2m and claimed the number one spot in 45 of its 63 markets, Screen Daily reported.
