Posted October 13, 2017

Tropical Storm Ophelia is strengthening and could become a Category 1 hurricane Wednesday night or Thursday, according to the 5 a.m. advisory Wednesday from the National Hurricane Center in Miami.

The storm is not now a threat to any land.

Forecasters expect Ophelia to continue in that general motion Thursday, but called for the storm to speed up while moving toward the northeast Friday. The storm may still strengthen over the next two days. Hurricane Season does not officially end until November 30th. Ophelia is set to brush past the Azores, the archipelago off the coast of Portugal.

There are no coastal watches or warnings in effect.

This could bring a blast of high winds to the Emerald Isle, particularly the western half of Ireland early next week. Incidentally, all of them have arrived in the months of August or September, except for Hurricane Fran, which swept past the area in October 1973 and Hurricane Alex in January 2016. The severity of the impact on Ireland due to Hurricane Ophelia would depend on the exact track followed by the Category 1 storm in the next few days. Then Ophelia will curve north towards Ireland's west coast as a post-tropical storm.
