Iran marks 1979 hostage crisis anniversary

Posted November 07, 2017

Iran marked the 38th anniversary of the takeover of the U.S. Embassy in Tehran on Saturday by displaying a missile and holding anti-U.S. demonstrations. Last month, Trump broke ranks with European allies, Russian Federation and China by refusing to re-certify Iran's compliance with its 2015 nuclear deal with world powers, reached during his predecessor Barack Obama's tenure.

"And when a missile is tested thousands of kilometers away, after (issuing empty) threats, all their president does is put out a tweet", he said in an apparent reference to North Korea's missile tests.

One of Iran's most powerful missiles, the Qadr, was prominently featured Saturday, along with anti-US and anti-Israel signs and chanting.

Qualcomm beats revenue estimates despite tussle with Apple

Hundreds of Iranian militant students stormed the American embassy following the 1979 Islamic Revolution that toppled US-backed Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi.

The 2015 nuclear deal with six world powers was reached during Obama's tenure. A number of Iranian officials have responded to Trump's controversial move with outrage, and Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the country's top authority, attacked the US president for aiming his rhetoric at Iran as a whole, rather than just its leadership. Under that deal, most worldwide sanctions on Iran were lifted in exchange for Tehran curbing nuclear activity. The U.S. cut its diplomatic relations with Iran after the embassy takeover and has had no diplomatic relations since. Trump's decision did not undo the agreement, which European countries and Iran continue to support, but allows Congress to decide whether to reimpose certain sanctions against the Islamic Republic. He also laid additional sanctions on Iran's elite Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Many Iranians call it the "den of spies".

Shamkhani said the United States is rethinking the election of Trump. State television said similar celebrations were being held in other Iranian cities and towns.

Pointing to Iran's countermeasures against United States policies, AEOI head asserted that the Supervisory Committee on Implementation of the JCPOA monitors the actions and behaviors of the other party and makes appropriate decisions accordingly, so we have many scenarios, according to the steps they take, we will respond.
