Chicago, Cook County sues Uber for concealing data breech

Posted November 30, 2017

Europe's data protection authorities can streamline their investigations into companies, something that is exceptional, but that has happened in big cases including the Yahoo data breach earlier this year.

Washington state Attorney General Bob Ferguson is suing Uber for failing to disclose a massive data breach that left the personal information of 57 million people exposed.

In Britain, Uber drew around 2.85 million users, on average, over the past three months, according to web and mobile app traffic measurement firm SimilarWeb, indicating that most British Uber users were likely caught up in the breach. "Nevertheless, the nature of the information now acknowledged to have been compromised, together with the allegation that the company concealed the breach without notifying affected drivers and consumers, and prior privacy concerns at Uber, makes this a serious incident that merits further scrutiny". If that penalty were applied to each of the affected drivers in Washington, it would total almost $22 million in penalties.

And in Italy, the only European Union country to have announced a full-blown investigation into the Uber incident before Wednesday, the fine may be more than $1 million, with the amount being related to the number of Italians who were affected.

The lawsuit was filed Tuesday in King County Superior Court.

Similarly, the UK's Minister of State for Digital, Matt Hancock, said, "The Government expects Uber to respond fully to the incident with the urgency it demands and to provide the appropriate support to its customers and drivers in the United Kingdom". The trial, brought by Alphabet-owned Waymo, centres on allegations that Uber stole autonomous vehicle technology trade secrets from it.
