Orissa second in crimes against women: NCRB

Crimes against foreign nationals increased in India in 2016 in comparison to 2015, according to data released recently by India's National Crime Records Bureau. This number is a 12 per cent decrease from 2015 when a total of 66,676 cases were registered. "Majority of cases under crimes against women were reported under "Cruelty by Husband or His Relatives" (32.6%) followed by "Assault on Women with Intent to Outrage her Modesty" (25.0%), "Kidnaping & Abduction of Women" (19.0%) and "Rape" (11.5%)". After Madhya Pradesh, it is Uttar Pradesh which is on second position in rape cases.

Delhi accounted for highest crime rate 974.9 under IPC crimes followed by Kerala 727.6 and Madhya Pradesh 337.9 against national average of 233.6.

According to NCRB's 2015 annual report, states like Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka and Maharashtra topped the figures as road rage data was used only for number of cases "causing injuries under rash driving/road rage".

Delhi police officials claim that the main reason for the national capital recording the highest number of cases is that as compared to other cities of different states, there is "free and fair" registration of cases, particularly of heinous crimes.

The city reported the highest number of murders - 479 out of 2,194 cases (21.8 percent) followed by Bengaluru 10.4 percent (229 cases) and Patna 8.9 percent (195 cases).

However, the number of cases has come down by 7% from 6,396 in 2015 to 5,942 in 2016. In 2015, 365 cases of crime were recorded to have taken placec against foreigners. "Delhi UT reported the highest crime rate (160.4) compared to the national average rate of 55.2", the NCRB report says. The next highest incidence was recorded in Maharashtra, at nearly 10 per cent, while Puducherry witnessed 8.6 per cent of such crimes.

A total of 1,11,569 children (41,175 males and 70,394 females) were reported missing in which maximum children missing were reported from West Bengal (15.1%) during 2016.

This year, a total of 8,132 cases of human trafficking were reported in the country with West Bengal reporting the highest number of cases (3,579) sharing almost 44% of the total cases followed by Rajasthan (1,422) sharing 17.9% of such cases in the country.

During 2016, IPC crimes reported charge sheeting rate of 72.9% and conviction rate of 46.8% in the country.

Madhya Pradesh also headed the list of states for atrocities, crime against Scheduled Tribes with 1,823 cases (27.8%), followed by Rajasthan (18.2%) with 1,195 cases and Odisha (10.4%) with 681 cases during 2016.

Murder, kidnapping, abduction, crimes against women and offence against property are a few heads where the city stands at number one.

In the country's top 19 metropolitan cities with a population over 20 lakh, Mumbai ranks 3rd in the share of crime incidents, preceded only by Delhi and Chennai.
