Russia Has Been Banned From Competing In The 2018 Winter Olympics

Russian athletes will be allowed to stand on the medal podium at the Winter Olympics - just not with their anthem playing or their nation's flag rising above them.

The IOC stopped short of that, instead saying that some Russian athletes will be permitted to compete in Pyeongchang under a specially created status, "Olympic Athlete from Russia (OAR)", according to the IOC statement.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has previously said it would be humiliating for Russia to compete without national symbols.

They will compete with a uniform carrying that name, while the Olympic anthem - and not the Russian one - will be played at any medal ceremony.
