Google Assistant Now Comes to Tablets & Lollipop Powered Smartphones

Google promised an Android version for low-end devices and now, it's making good on its word by introducing the new Android Oreo Go.

The Assistant on tablets will be rolling out over the coming weeks to users with default language set to English in the US.

Countries such as UK, India, Australia, Canada and Singapore have already started to receive the Google Assistant in the English language for mobile devices with Android 5.0 and below. Later on, the feature will come to Italy, Japan, Germany, Brazil and South Korea. For instance, a user can ask Google Assistant to open "vacation pictures from July" and it will show the relevant results. We can understand the rationale behind this move as fragmentation is a major bottleneck with Android devices and sizable user-base is still running the Android 5.0 OS. Just those that are running Android 6.0 (Marshmallow) or later (Nougat and Oreo). With the Google Assistant, the user can make phone calls, send text messages, set reminders, set alarm, and many more.

The Google Assistant, that debuted with first-gen Pixel smartphones back in 2016, was rolled out to non-Google smartphones back in March this year. Google didn't mention when Android users in other parts of the world would be receiving the update, if at all. Rather, an icon in users' "All Apps" lists will be present that can bring up the AI bot.
