Lorde's decision to cancel her concert in Tel Aviv

Israel's ambassador to New Zealand has invited Lorde to meet him after the Kiwi singer cancelled her concert in Tel Aviv.

The pair urged Lorde to "act in the spirit of progressive New Zealanders who came before you and continue their legacy", by canceling her show.

The Israeli concert promoter responded to the cancellation: "We forgive her".

Lorde isn't the only artist to boycott Israel - Roger Waters, Lauryn Hill and Elvis Costello also won't perform in the country because of the government's treatment of Palestinians.

Lorde announced the show on December 18 in a Twitter post which was immediately flooded with comments calling for her to cancel the show and stating the view that performing in Tel Aviv would be equal to endorsing the Israeli government.

"If you canceled your concert in Israel, an imperfect liberal democracy, but not in Russian Federation, a flawless dictatorship that poisons its own dissidents, persecutes gays, and helped kill 500,000 Syrians, you're not being pro-human rights - you're just being anti-Israeli".

Some acts, like Radiohead, Nick Cave, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, and Justin Timberlake have refused to cancel their shows. "She will still be performing in Russian Federation, but no one accuses her of complicity with Putin, the occupation of the Crimea or chemical warfare in Syria", Moses also said.

Alluding to the title of Lorde's first album, Israel's culture minister Miri Regev said she should be a "pure heroine" of culture, void of any foreign political considerations. "We hope that her actions will inspire Lorde's many young, progressive fans to carry on the movement and speak out against injustice".

Lorde's decision also drew an attack from actress Roseanne Barr who tweeted, "Boycott this bigot", with a link to an article about the cancelation.

Many activist who called on Lorde to cancel the show are part of the growing BDS movement which seeks to culturally isolate and use non-violent means to bring around the end of Israel's occupation of Palestine.
