Everton's Sam Allardyce comments on reported Spurs target Ross Barkley

Chelsea are closing in on a £15million deal for Everton midfielder Ross Barkley and could confirm the move before the weekend, according to reports.

The Premier League champions lost out on the Everton midfielder on transfer deadline day last August despite agreeing a £35million fee with his club.

Barkley cited his own injury as the reason for the change of mind back then - he hasn't played all season in fact, after undergoing surgery in July - though it seemed like that he really wanted to join Spurs instead.

Sam Allardyce admitted on Thursday that Everton remained resigned to Barkley's departure from Goodison Park, where he rose through the ranks to the first team.

"I expect there would be some interest some time in this window if there's going to be any interest from one of the big boys".

Chelsea are going to pay £15m to secure the 24-year-old this month.

They are now trying to negotiate a lower price of around £20m because Barkley's contract expires at the end of this season and he will be able to walk away from the club for nothing on a Bosman free transfer.

With Barkley's current contract set to expire at the end of this season, Everton look to have chose to cash in on him now rather than allow him to leave on a free transfer in the summer. Manager Antonio Conte has revealed that Chelsea are aiming to add more players for their undersized squad because the club are still competing on all four fronts.

The Telegraph's report claims that Chelsea have submitted a bid to Everton for Barkley.
