Former President Barack Obama will make his first talk show appearance since leaving office on "My Next Guest Needs No Introduction with David Letterman", which premieres January 12 on Netflix.

Produced by RadicalMedia and Letterman's Worldwide Pants, Incorporated, for Netflix, each 60-minute episode of My Next Guest is centered around "one extraordinary figure whom Letterman finds fascinating".

Obama will be the first guest on Letterman's six-part series for the streaming giant.

US President Barack Obama tapes an appearance on the Late Show with David Letterman at the Ed Sullivan Theater in New York, May 4, 2015.

Letterman's lineup of influential guests includes George Clooney, Malala Yousafzai, JAY-Z, Tina Fey, and Howard Stern.

Although this will be Obama's first talk show interview since leaving the Oval Office, he did sit down for an interview with Prince Harry in September.

Taking his usual late night hijinks in a more serious direction seems like a natural progression in Letterman's semi-retirement, as the 70-year-old comedian's material has grown more political and socially conscious in later years.

Last March, Letterman told New York Magazine that he "would have gone to work on Trump" if he was still a late night host.

That title suggests a show that's setting a high bar for booking celebrities with name recognization and Letterman's first guest certainly qualifies: The show will launch with the first post-presidency TV talk show interview with Barack Obama. These segments will allow him to "dig deeper" into topics related to the guest featured in the episode.
