Apple executives offers choice to save battery life, doesn't recommend it

Although he wouldn't suggest users do so, he said, "If you don't want it, you can turn it off". At the end of 2017, Apple admitted to iPhone performance to prevent shut-downs related to the device's deteriorating battery health.

Developer updates, or betas, are how Apple tests out new features and software updates before broadly rolling them out to the public.

Chief executive Tim Cook announced the throttling feature, which slows down performance to preserve battery life on older devices, will become optional after the tech giant listened to consumers who were angered by the feature. "We apologize. There's been a lot of misunderstanding about this issue, so we would like to clarify and let you know about some changes we're making", Apple said in December.

Italy's antitrust body said on Thursday it had opened a probe into allegations that Apple and Samsung Electronics Co Ltd used software updates to slow their mobile phones and push clients into buying new handsets.

Apple released an apology and Cook reiterated in this ABC interview, saying that the company should have been clearer when first implementing the slow-down feature.

The issue struck a nerve on social media, where many voiced a theory that Apple intentionally slows down older phones to encourage customers to buy new ones.

"We deeply apologize for anybody that thinks we had some other kind of motivation", Cook told ABC.

The company has also temporarily reduced the price of replacement batteries for the iPhone 6 and later to $29, starting in late January.

Those with the update will have an option to chose whether they want their iPhone's performance to be throttled when its battery degrades to a certain point.

While many iPhone owners were upset about the performance drop, many were also outraged that Apple didn't give customers a choice and was not upfront about what it was doing - sparking a slew of lawsuits around the world. Currently, iOS will warn users if their battery is substantially decayed, but will not notify them of partial aging - even if that aging is severe enough to warrant the slowdown.
