U.S. stocks close mixed after earnings reports

Solid gains in technology and health care stocks are sending major USA indexes higher in early trading on Wall Street.

The advance put the three main indexes on pace for their best four-week run since 2016.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 13 points, or 0.5 percent, to 2,852.

Shares of Intel Corp (INTC.O) jumped more than 10 percent and hit their highest level since October 2000 a day after the company reported quarterly results.

The dollar was on track for its worst week since May after comments from senior USA officials this week backing a weak currency.

At 12:29 p.m. ET (1729 GMT), the Dow Jones Industrial Average .DJI rose 93.42 points, or 0.35 percent, at 26,486.21. Fourth-quarter gross domestic product increased at a 2.6 percent annual rate, the Commerce Department reported.

The reports helped investors look beyond data that showed USA economic growth unexpectedly slowed in the fourth quarter as strong consumer spending resulted in a surge in imports.

For the week, the Dow rose 2.08 percent, the S&P 500 gained 2.22 per cent and the Nasdaq advanced 2.31 per cent. The Nasdaq Composite Index was up 39.85 points, or 0.54 per cent, to 7,454.90.

The US and Turkey are North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies but they have diverging interests in the Syrian civil war. Analysts have cautioned that the area could be a flashpoint in already strained relations between Washington and Ankara .

S&P 500 measures the performance of 500 widely held common stocks of large-cap US companies.

The Dow is up 321.07 points, or 1.2 percent.

Oil prices settled higher on Friday after hitting three-year highs, with crude also posting a weekly gain as a weaker USA dollar underpinned prices.

Benchmark 10-year notes US10YT=RR last fell 11/32 in price to yield 2.6599 percent, from 2.621 percent late on Thursday. On Thursday, the contract climbed to as high as $71.28, its highest since 2014.
