The U.N. agency for Palestinian refugees is asking Arab nations for financial support after the Trump administration cut tens of millions of dollars of aid money.

It follows President Donald Trump's announcement in December declaring Jerusalem to be Israel's capital which has created reverberations through the region and countered decades of US foreign policy and global consensus that Jerusalem's status should be decided in negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians.

"The United States has been the single largest donor to the Palestinians in history", he said.

Palestinians use the Arab word "Sumud", which literally means "steadfastness", to refer to the capability of being "resilient" when confronted with adverse circumstances.

Abbas has already dismissed the widely anticipated plan as the "slap of the century", mocking Trump's promise that he would herald in "the deal of the century" between the Israelis and the Palestinians.

During a press conference following the meeting, Safadi announced that the Arab ministerial delegation tasked with communicating with the worldwide community regarding US' Jerusalem move will meet with European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini and European Union foreign ministers this month.

A source in Ramallah said Saudi Arabia will be the "key player" in the region on behalf of Washington when it comes to the new peace plan, and Palestinians fear they might "impose" a bad plan on the Palestinians.
