Netflix Premieres 'The Cloverfield Paradox'; Film Not Well-Received By Critics

Posted February 09, 2018

Again, Netflix's business model relies on putting itself on people's radar in a way that inspires them to subscribe, and from that perspective, it's hard to argue that this bit of Super Bowl showmanship largely worked.

"The truth is, despite the prestige and a talented cast including David Oyelowo, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Elizabeth Debicki, Daniel Bruhl, Chris O'Dowd, and Zhang Ziyi, The Cloverfield Paradox gives off the exhausted vibe of a TV episode you've already seen".

The Cloverfield Paradox is a 2018 American science fiction horror film directed by Julius Onah, written by Oren Uziel and Doug Jung, and produced by J. Then came Netflix's 30-second ad spot, a trailer for Cloverfield Paradox, which was released the minute the game ended. However more rumours surfaced to suggest that Netflix was eyeing-up the release.

The audience reviews on RT, however, were more kind, giving the film a modestly okay 63 percent score.

As Cargill notes in his tweet, he watched the film last night along with many others after Netflix announced it would be available immediately following the Super Bowl. The trailer for the Cloverfield sequel aired for the first time during the game.

The Cloverfield Paradox is basically every space shuttle-based disaster film smashed together.

As of time of writing, there are only 39 reviews counted so far.

"Sounds intriguing, but the actual movie is strangely plain, eyesore-overlit and uselessly frantic", said Glenn Kenny of the New York Times.

They have particularly been very effective in denying South Africa the opportunity to build partnerships, especially upfront. AB de Villiers , Faf du Plessis and Quinton de Kock have all been ruled out of the remaining matches on this Indian tour.

While I didn't really like how Cloverfield Paradox's story is presented, there are two awesome things this movie did. "A tense, sometimes fun mashup of classic sci-fi, but often overwhelmed by absurdity and chaos".

About that 30-second trailer: Indiewire critic David Erlich had this to say on Twitter about Netflix's move: It "makes no sense why they went with the coy "coming very soon" thing instead of IT'S F--ING DROPPING TONIGHT GET READY A-HOLES".

"In the tacked-on opening scene, Gugu Mbatha-Raw's Hamilton and her husband (Roger Davies) baldly outline the film's premise while waiting in a snaking, 1970s-style line for gas", the review continues.

Set in the future, the film follows a group of astronauts and engineers from different countries who test a particle accelerator in space to, hopefully, solve the earth's energy crisis. As we venture into the depths of the Cloverfield space station by way of cinematographer Dan Mindel's sleek photography, you can't help but imagine how the movie might've looked on the big screen.
