Sheriff: Guns taken from Georgia teacher after car set afire

A school teacher locked his students in the hallway and fired a shot when the principal opened the door Dalton High School on Wednesday, according to USA media reports.

No students were in the classroom when the incident occurred, but a student hurt their ankle as the school was being evacuated, according to reports.

According to police, the teacher, later identified as Davidson, barricaded himself in a classroom and would not let students inside.

"I didn't get the door open very far, but he slammed the door and hollered 'Go away, don't come in here.' He had some nonsensical noises that were made as well", he recalled, adding he returned with a key and tried to unlock the door when Davidson told him he had a gun. According to police, the teacher had locked his classroom and denied students access to the room, a police spokesperson told CNN. That SRO has recently had shared responsibilities at Dalton High School and the middle school.

Davidson faces six charges including aggravated assault; terroristic threats and acts; and having a weapon on school property.

The school went on lockdown following the gunshot.

Bartoo then called the school's resource officer and then tried to enter Davidson's classroom again.

Students were allowed to return to Dalton High School Thursday morning to pick up their personal belongings, with classes set to resume Friday.

Despite these incidents, Principal Steve Bartoo says he was surprised by Davidson's behavior Wednesday and described him as an "excellent" teacher, Fox News reports.

Chastain said in an interview that Davidson himself had commented that arming teachers was a bad idea.

Police say a teacher who fired a gun inside a Georgia classroom taught social studies and was the play-by-play announcer for the high school's football team.

Dalton police informed school officials after they investigated the rambling story at the police station, but spokesman Bruce Frazier said police investigators only became aware of the burning vehicle situation this week.

One of the Parkland survivors, Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School senior Sara Imam, offered support to Dalton students, the Times Free Press reports.

"It wasn't a drill", student Jayden Boston said.

Dalton High School student Nathangel Lopez was still huddled in a locker room Wednesday, fearing for his life, when he tweeted at the NRA and President Donald Trump that student cries for gun control are being ignored. "I thought it was a dream".

Dalton is about 30 miles south of Chattanooga.
