The National People's Party (NPP) President Conrad Sangma will be the new chief minister of Meghalaya and the swearing-in of the new ministers will take place on March 6. The UDP had put a condition that the NPP led government should be led by P A Sangma's son Conrad Sangma who has also served as Deputy Chief Minister of the State in the past.

Though, Congress had emerged as the single largest party with 20 members, the regional United Democratic Party (UDP), which got six seats and emerged as the kingmaker, pledged support for Conrad Sangma-led NPP.

The NPP, founded by former Lok Sabha speaker PA Sangma, won 19 seats in results declared on Saturday, the UDP got six, the PDF got four, the BP and the Hill State Peoples Democratic Party secured two seats each in the 60-member House. Mr. Sangma along with senior BJP leaders of Assam Himanta Biswa Sarma met governor Ganga Prasad at Raj Bhavan in Shillong and submitted letter of support from 34 MLA's. He is now the Lok Sabha member from Tura constituency. "We have come to express our support to the regional parties to form a non-Congress government", Rijiju told PTI after the meeting.

In a way, this marks a 3:0 for the BJP, as its ally NDPP staked claimed to form government in Nagaland, a day after the saffron party wrested Left bastion Tripura. NPP is a partner of national Democratic alliance NDA.
