DC woman gets $10000 voucher from United after being bumped from flight

An airline passenger who was bumped from an oversold flight saw her luck change when United gave her an offer she couldn't refuse: a voucher for a whopping $10,000.

Allison Preiss, a D.C. area managing director of communications, tweeted about the lucrative deboarding experience on Thursday from the Dulles International Airport in Virginia.

In the case of an oversold flight, airlines will kick off the lowest fare passenger, unless there is a volunteer. Preiss was entitled to cash in the amount of four times what she paid for the ticket, around $650 total.

And that turned out to work in her favor.

She said United at first offered her a $2,000 voucher and the next available seat on a flight. A computer system glitch caused thousands of United Airlines flights throughout major airports to be grounded Wednesday morning.

But then the United agent offered her a travel voucher for a larger amount.

United confirmed in an email on Friday that "yes, we issued" Preiss "this voucher per our policy".

She took it. Along with two $10 meal vouchers.

It's also important to be aware of any connections between different airlines during the trip, Passman said, as carriers don't interline pets, meaning the owner would have to collect and recheck the animal when switching carriers.

"They really do not want to give me cash". United did not immediately say if any other passengers have received a $10,000 voucher. She wrote on Twitter, "I am going to go INSANE at Pizza Hut".

And where is Preiss going to go with her $10,000 travel voucher?
