Prince Philip admitted to hospital for surgery

In the 1990s, the Queen Mother underwent two successful hip operations, aged 95 and 97.

Buckingham Palace have not given any further details of the procedure, other than to say the operation is on his hip.

Prince Philip, the 96-year-old husband of Queen Elizabeth, is due to have hip surgery on Wednesday at a private hospital in London.

The Duke of Edinburgh is recovering in hospital after successfully having a hip replacement.

The Queen and the Duke of York were in attendance at the event.

There maybe be some concern for the duke given his age, but Scarlett McNally, an orthopaedic surgeon and council member of the Royal College of Surgeons, said: "Any operation and any anaesthetic carries some risk".

"What is most important is someone's fitness, as in their heart and lung fitness, how much exercise they do and how well nourished they are".

At the time, the Independent reported she was "among the oldest patients to undergo the operation". He was hospitalized at King Edward VII Hospital in Marylebone.

Philip announced his retirement from royal duties in May and curtailed most of his charity work although he still accompanies the Queen on occasion.

The hospital was rated as "requires improvement" by inspectors previous year.

He has been largely blessed with good health, but he has been admitted to hospital with various complaints in recent years.

Philip's last reported stay came in 2012 after suffering the effects of standing for hours in cold, damp rain during the Diamond Jubilee pageant.

In the year to September 2017, 181 clinical incidents were reported, including four that resulted in death.

In 2013, the royal household said Philip had once again been admitted to the hospital for exploratory surgery after his doctors revealed that it was necessary following "abdominal investigations".

King Edward VII's Hospital said at the time of the report that it "places the delivery of the highest standards of medical and nursing care to patients as our priority".
