Khosrowshahi's interview with CBS News came in conjunction with today's kickoff of the second annual Uber Elevate summit in Los Angeles, which focuses on Uber's plans to operate fleets of electric-powered, vertical-takeoff-and-landing air taxis. The flying uber can take-off and land vertically thanks to four rotors.

"We want to create the network around those vehicles so that regular people can take these taxis in the air for longer distances when they want to avoid traffic at affordable prices", Khosrowshahi said on CBS This Morning.

"Using data from Uber, NASA will use its research facility at the Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) airport to simulate a small passenger carrying aircraft as it flies through DFW airspace during peak scheduled air traffic, and analyse if these operations would trigger traffic collision advisories", Uber said in a statement. "Alphabet CEO Larry Page has made significant investments in companies working on flying cars, such as startups Kitty Hawk" Kitty Hawk and Zee Aero. Eventually, the flying cars are supposed to fly autonomously. Uber say its flying taxis will be able to fly between San Francisco and San Jose, California in just fifteen minutes-a trip that takes almost two hours by auto in rush-hour traffic.

The prototypes look more like drones than helicopters reports CNBC. Batteries with sufficient energy density to work don't exist yet, and Uber asking for them to exist won't help.

The issue of self-driving vehicles is a sensitive one for Uber, due to an accident involving an Uber autonomous auto that killed a pedestrian in Arizona in March. Last year, San Francisco City Attorney Dennis Herrera's office released a finding estimating that 45,000 Uber and Lyft drivers are operating in the city, leading to gridlock caused by the extra vehicles. Its autonomous vehicle program has stalled, following a fatal collision with a pedestrian in March.
