Clinton campaign on Comey email use: 'Ironic and deeply frustrating'

The long-awaited report faulted the Federal Bureau of Investigation and its former director James Comey over the handling of the Hillary Clinton email probe in 2016 - and concluded that two agents working under Mr. Comey showed a "willingness to take official action to impact" Mr. Trump's election chances.

The watchdog report also concluded that Comey's handling of Clinton's email investigation was "extraordinary and insubordinate" but was not motivated by political boas.

In one of tweets, Trump also took aim at Strzok, a key figure in both the Clinton email and Russian Federation probes, who was criticized in the new report for having sent a text during the 2016 campaign saying that "we'll stop" Trump from making it to the White House.

"The IG Report totally destroys James Comey and all of his minions including the great lovers, Peter Strzok and Lisa Page, who started the disgraceful Witch Hunt against so many innocent people", Trump tweeted Saturday morning, adding, "It will go down as a dark and risky period in American History!" "We'll stop it", Mr Strzok responded.

Horowitz found that while the actions of senior FBI leaders, like then-FBI Director James Comey, "cast a cloud" over the investigation, their actions were not driven by political bias, and there is no evidence that they acted to influence the outcome of the investigation. I assume that he contemplated stopping Trump by leaking damaging (whether true or false) information gleaned from that investigation to the press.

Dershowitz, who frequently has spoken against the special counsel investigation, said he'd welcome a similar look by the IG's office into the FBI's investigation of Trump.

The inspector general's report did note that the texts display "a willingness to take official action to impact a presidential candidate's electoral prospects". "We concluded that Comey's unilateral announcement was inconsistent with Department policy and violated long-standing Department practice and protocol by, among other things, criticizing Clinton's uncharged conduct", the report says. Clinton was accused by political opponents of recklessly endangering national security and trying to hide her communications from disclosure under open records laws.
