Evaluating the Ryan Anderson trade for Rockets and Suns

Posted September 03, 2018

Most Suns fans are shocked with the team's decision to trade Brandon Knight and Marquese Chriss for Ryan Anderson and De'Anthony Melton. He has two years and $41 million left on his contract.

Melton was selected by the Rockets in the second round of the 2018 National Basketball Association draft.

For the Suns, the $15.6M represents Brandon Knight's salary for the 2019-20 season. That financial concession will likely make trading Anderson an easier proposition for Phoenix, too.

Phoenix has until July 10, 2019, to decide on picking up Anderson's $21.3 million deal or waiving him for $15.6 million.

The Rockets have sought to trade Anderson since last offseason. In the 72 games he played with the Suns last season, Chriss averaged 7.7 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 1.0 blocks on 42.3 percent shooting from the field, and 29.5 percent from beyond the arc.

Knight's minutes dropped significantly from the 2015-16 season to the 2016-17 season. If they don't exercise Chriss' team option before the October 31 deadline, they'll save up to $5.6 million in 2019 with the difference between Anderson and Knight's contracts. Knight, 26, is scheduled to earn $30.2 million over the next two seasons.

The Suns traded for Anderson with an expectation that he could start at power forward.

Chriss, the No. 8 overall pick in the 2016 NBA Draft, never saw his career blossom with the Suns.

Melton, a combo guard, is a rookie from USC.

Chriss is a 21-year-old athletic big man and running the pick-and-roll with MVP James Harden and Chris Paul could untap his potential.
