Sen. Graham: Saudi crown prince 'has got to go' after Khashoggi's disappearance

Posted October 18, 2018

His disappearance has strained relations with Washington amid strong pressure in Congress and the USA media to prevent the issue from being swept under the carpet.

Pompeo also met with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the heir to the throne whose rise to power prompted Khashoggi to enter exile in the United States.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has arrived in Turkey amid a growing diplomatic crisis over the disappearance there earlier this month of dissident Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

Pompeo said he would meet with President Tayyip Erdogan in the Turkish capital Ankara, two weeks after Khashoggi vanished when he visited the Saudi consulate in Istanbul to collect documents he needed for his planned marriage.

Sen. Lindsey Graham said Tuesday on Fox News that he wants to see Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman forced out of his position after the mysterious disappearance of activist Jamal Khashoggi.

"My hope is that we can reach conclusions that will give us a reasonable opinion as soon as possible, because the investigation is looking into many things such as toxic materials and those materials being removed by painting them over", Erdogan told reporters.

Trump offered his most robust defence of the Saudi regime during a Tuesday interview with The Associated Press, in which he linked the allegations of the Khashoggi case with the recent Brett Kavanaugh affair. The source said Turkish authorities had not asked him to leave.

"This is built into the sauce for Donald Trump, and I think people know that, and we have to keep pointing it out, it's very bad", Lemon said tonight, just hours after Trump insulted Stormy Daniels by calling her "horseface".

"Just spoke with the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia who totally denied any knowledge of what took place in their Turkish Consulate", Trump wrote on Twitter.

"I've got to say, you know, this was supposed to be a new Saudi government that was going to be reforming - opening up - transparency - moderating Islam - and to see something like this could be a real setback, " he said.

Graham, who described himself as Saudi Arabia's "biggest defender in the Senate, ' turned on the US ally, saying Crown Prince Mohammed - who is often referred to by his initials MBS - is a 'toxic" figure who 'has got to go'.

But there has been mounting criticism of some of the prince's moves.

Turkish police did not search the Saudi consul's Istanbul residence on Tuesday, officers at the scene said, because Saudi officials were not able to join.

Turkish officials believe Khashoggi was killed and dismembered inside the consulate.

Pompeo was to have a dinner Tuesday night with Prince Mohammed and was expected to fly to Turkey on Wednesday. The consul, Mohammad al-Otaibi, left Turkey on a commercial flight bound for Saudi Arabia earlier on Tuesday. Saudi officials did not respond to requests for comment for this article.
