While the New York Post is reporting that the decision to oust Kelly was fueled by her blackface controversy, both CNN and Variety reported Thursday that talks of cancelling "Megyn Kelly Today" started before the latest scandal.
An official statement has yet to be made by the network. In the almost-two years Kelly was at NBC - 13 of which she spent hosting the 9 a.m. hour of Today, rebranded as Megyn Kelly Today - she came under fire for going soft on world leaders, insulting celebrities, enabling hate-mongers, and more. Sources with knowledge of the situation say that NBC News chairman Andy Lack disapproved of Kelly aggressively covering stories about sexual harassment on her show, particularly related to NBC and disgraced anchor Matt Lauer, who was sacked last November. "Back when I was a kid, that was okay just as long as you were dressing as a character".
Kelly's NBC show has been on thin ice lately after receiving consistently low ratings.
King says Jordan to reclaim land leased to Israel under 1994 deal
Jordan's King Abdullah II on Sunday said he has decided not to renew parts of his country's landmark peace treaty with Israel. The deal was signed in November 1994 by Abdullah's father, King Hussein, and then-Israeli prime minister Yitzhak Rabin.
"I defended the idea, saying as long as it was respectful, and part of a Halloween costume, it seemed okay", she added.
"Here's the worst part - her deal is a non-break deal - so she walks away with all that money", they said.
"Reports suggest she's on her way out and will be paid her full contract, but she won't be returning to NBC anytime soon", Daniel Cassino, associate professor of political science at Fairleigh Dickinson University who authored the book Fox News and American Politics, told the Guardian.
"Megyn Kelly Today" is not over yet.

Kelly discussed the origins of her creatively spelled name with the website NameCandy in 2009. First she apologized in an email to her colleagues on her show and she also apologize on-air the next day. Inside sources report that Kelly will leave her 9 a.m. segment when the current season wraps up in December. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Freedman is scheduled to meet with NBC executives on Friday.
"'Megyn" is the spelling on my birth certificate", Kelly told the website said in 2009.
Before Megyn made the jump to NBC, she was earning $8 million a year at Fox.
But of course, Megyn Kelly wouldn't care about that, because she has a long history of saying really awful race-related things, saying sexist things when it was convenient to do so (i.e. when it wasn't about her or her experiences), and the occasional dash of homophobia. Al Roker said that Kelly "owes a bigger apology to folks of color around the country".
