Returning from one injury to play at the Paris Masters, Rafael Nadal pulled out with another one.

Following Rafael Nadal's withdrawal on Wednesday, Djokovic is set to regain the top spot at the upcoming ATP Rankings next Monday, the first time over the past two years.

Nadal, who has never won the Paris Masters, begins his campaign in the French capital against fellow Spaniard Fernando Verdasco, a 6-4, 6-4 victor over France's Jeremy Chardy.

Djokovic all set to become the first player to be ranked outside the top-20 then climb to No 1 in the same season in 18 years- Marat Safin of Russian Federation was at No 38 on February 28, 2000, climbing No 1 spot on November 20, same year. I've played in only nine tournaments and have retired in two. But the outcome proved to be double disappointment as both matches were cancelled and Nadal's participation at the upcoming Nitto ATP Finals thrown into doubt. Nadal has dealt with off-and-on knee problems for years and, given his injury record, the 32-year-old Spaniard prefers to be cautious.

Novak Djokovic has stopped play at the Paris Masters to help a struggling spectator.
